Out from under the bed

Michael Durand

Feb 24 – March 17, 2012.

Out from under the bed; a solo exhibition by Michael Durand opens in SOMA on February 24. Reception will be held at 7:00pm.

Out from under the bed is an exhibition of work by photographic artist Michael Durand; the first solo show in his hometown of Waterford since 1998. Since then Michael’s work has been exhibited in national and international spaces. He has been commissioned by private and state institutions including, The Department of Art, Sports and Tourism, MCHD and the European Central Bank, his work is also in public and private collections in Ireland, Europe and the USA.

Out from under the bed brings together for the first time a number of bodies of work from the passed decade. The show includes extracts from Statistical portraits commissioned by the Irish financial services authority and Consultations and Observations commissioned by Waterford Healing Arts Trust. With over one hundred framed photographs on show the exhibition seeks to explore the depth and breath of the artists career to date.

What is of particular interest in this exhibition is the opportunity it affords to see the development of ideas and approaches expressed through photography on the part of the artist. Public Commissions and documentary work sit along side personal projects, as does the to and fro from analogue to digital work spaces. Arguably one of the strengths in Durand’s extensive body of work is in its variety, which captures the constantly changing, questioning and evolving nature of his personal perspective. Michael is currently working in Waterford and Dublin, and is a member of Plasma Studios in Waterford City.
